IE Temp Files

Every once in awhile when the Berners-Lee pipeline clogs up, you are instructed to delete the temporary files that IE saves.

You can do it with the Click of an IE Options button.

Here's where those files are stored:

Gmail Features

The top 10

Bill Kee, Associate Product Marketing Manager for Gmail, has a blog and has listed 10 major features of the free web based email system.
Including:

"When you get an email that references an address, look to the right and you'll probably see a link from Gmail pointing you to a map of the address on Google Maps.

Gmail also recognizes email text that refers to an event (e.g., 'dinner tomorrow at 8pm'), and will give you a link to add it to your calendar.

It'll even pick up on package tracking numbers from UPS and link you directly to the tracking page, so you don't have to copy and paste the number. I really like this last one when I order stuff online and want the instant gratification of knowing a package is on its way.

MHTML

One file web pages

When a web page is created using HTML, the coding is normally contained in one file and the graphics in separate folders.

The Mime HTML or MHT/MHTML format changed that.

Starting with Office 2000 as an add-in and carried through XP as a "Web Archive" option, the format emerged in Office 2003 as a "Single file web page" selection in the File Save As dialog box.

Here are the Save As choices available in an application such as Word:
  • Web Page, Complete means that the contents of the page (including any pictures) will be saved into a folder as separate files, similar to those on the server hosting the site.

  • Web Page, HTML only means that only the HTML information will be saved. This option and Web Page, Complete will enable you to open the file for viewing in Internet Explorer (or any other browser) at a later time, even when you are offline.

  • Web Archive means that the page will be saved, along with any images it contains, as a single file. You can view a Web Archive later without being connected to the Internet.

  • Text File means that only the text on the page will be saved, not the HTML (or any other) formatting, including graphics.

New Window

Pick your target

Expression Web/FrontPage/HTML provides the opportunity to choose how a page opens when you click on a hyperlink.

Create a hyperlink as you usually would by selecting the text (or graphic) you want to use for the link.

Choose Insert > Hyperlink...
(or use Ctrl-K or the toolbar icon Link icon as a shortcut),
and locate the page in the current web or enter an address in the URL field.

On the right side of the Create Hyperlink window you'll see a button named "Target frame"; click the button.

You'll get the Target Frame dialog box.

In the "Common targets" field, select New Window.

Click OK, then click OK to close the Create Hyperlink dialog box.

Your hyperlink will now open a new browser window when clicked.

Target page

The code would appear like this:
<a target="_blank" href="TCC/Blog/blogger.html">Blog</a>

To make it the page default, place the following code in the "head" section:
<base target="_blank">

W3C Validation

Standards

Web pages are written in a language called Hyper Text Markup Language; HTML
The latest version of HTML is 4.01.

There is a move to upgrade the code to Extensible Hyper Text Markup Language.

XHTML is compatible with XML (EXtensible Markup Language) allowing applications to more easily exchange data.

In preparation for making the change, edit your web pages so that element and attribute names are in lower case. XHTML is case-sensitive.

Use <p> rather than <P>.

Also end tags are required. Make sure that <p> is followed by </p>.

<br> should be written <br /> and <hr> as <hr />.

New Line

Shift Enter

When you hit the Enter key, the FrontPage/Expression Web editor inserts an HTML <p> (paragraph) tag. This appears as a double line space in a Web browser.

To insert a single line space (or line break) via an HTML <br> tag, just hold down the Shift key and hit Enter.

This happens when you use the

Enter key

Here's what happens with
Shift +Enter

You could also use Insert>Break... Normal Line Break, but that takes too long.

By the way, if you want your code to be XHTML compliant, use lower case for the elements and pair every <p> with a closing </p>

Differences with HTML

Single elements can be used with a built in closer such as:
<hr /> or <br />

Define URL Parts

More than dot com

Google engineer and blogger Matt Cutts has defined the pieces that make up a Uniform Resource Locator.

At least as Google refers to them when they're sitting around in their backrooms
Domain

Dynamic URL
Fragment or a Named anchor

The Googlers I've talked to are split right down the middle on which way to refer it. Disputes on what to call it can be settled with arm wrestling, dance-offs, or drinking contests. Typically the fragment is used to refer to an internal section within a web document. In this case, the named anchor means "skip to 2 minutes and 30 seconds into the video."

Cascading Style Sheets

As a web page is formatted in Expression Web/FrontPage, the style choices are applied to each element.
To format the body of the page, the HTML code might be:

<body background="blue" color="white" font-family="times, serif" font-size=10pt>

Every page on the site would need to be coded this way in order to have a consistent look.
Cascading Style Sheets will simplify the problem. On an external page the elements can be defined like this:

body {
background: blue;
color: white;
font-family: times, serif;
font-size: 10pt

Each page would contain a reference to the CSS definitions:

<head>
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="mystyle.css">
</head>

When the element "body" is used it will now use the CSS references.

  3. Choose a time server, and click on the Update Now button.

As long as you are connected to the internet, Windows will attempt to synchronize the time once per week.
You can type the name of a time server if you want to use one that is not listed. Only time servers that use the Simple Network Time Protocol (SNTP) will work. Inserting an Internet address that uses the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) will not work. The time server time.windows.com is operated by Microsoft. IE Spells

Missing feature found

For years, I've filled out forms on the net and then had to copy and paste into Word to check doubtful spelling.

Now there is a tool that should have been included in the first place.

"ieSpell is a free Internet Explorer browser extension that spell checks text input boxes on a webpage. It should come in particularly handy for users who do a lot of web-based text entry (e.g. web mails, forums, blogs, diaries).

Even if your web application already includes spell checking functionality, you might still want to install this utility because it is definitely much faster than a server-side solution. Plus you get to store and use your personal word list across all your applications, instead of maintaining separate ones on each application."

Got a web camera? You can use Viddler to record footage directly from the camera to the website. There's no third-party software

"Viddler is very different from other video-delivery based websites, because we stream our videos instead of having the user download it.

That means you get to watch videos without having to wait for the entire video to load.

This is especially useful when you want to view the last few minutes of a very long video.

It's a secure system and prevents other people from watching the video (in ways they're not supposed to) or ripping the video off the site.

Google Search Tips

Drill down to the answer

20 search tips to be used with Google.

Here are a few:

  • Either/or. Google normally searches for pages that contain all the words you type in the search box, but if you want pages that have one term or another (or both), use the OR operator -- or use the "" symbol (pipe symbol) to save you a keystroke.

  • Quotes. If you want to search for an exact phrase, use quotes.

  • Not. If you don't want a term or phrase, use the "-" symbol.

  • Similar terms. Use the "~" symbol to return similar terms.
  • Definitions. Use the "define:" operator to get a quick definition.
  • Vertical search. Instead of searching for a term across all pages on the web, search within a specialized field. Google has a number of specific searches, allowing you to search within blogs, news, books, and much more

When used in the right ways, color can save on energy consumption. When used in the wrong ways, color can contribute to global pollution.

As a powerful form of communication, color is irreplaceable. Red means "stop" and green means "go." Traffic lights send this universal message. Likewise, the colors used for a product, web site, business card, or logo cause powerful reactions.

"The core of any Web site is the navigation mechanism, the menu. If Web sites are primarily about organizing and presenting content, a site's menu provides the means of traversing this information set.
In designing a Web navigation system, it is often difficult to balance the competing objectives of simplicity, flexibility, usability, and maintainability. Often very simple designs are not flexible; flexible designs trade off with usable ones; and easily maintainable designs are rarely even considered."

Hosts File

I've got your number

"...the Hosts file is like an address book. When you type an address like www.yahoo.com into your browser, the Hosts file is consulted to see if you have the IP address, or "telephone number," for that site. If you do, then your computer will "call it" and the site will open. If not, your computer will ask your ISP's (internet service provider) computer for the phone number before it can "call" that site.
Most of the time, you do not have addresses in your "address book," because you have not put any there. Therefore, most of the time your computer asks for the IP address from your ISP to find sites."

More Cascading Style Sheet Help

Tutorials, Tools, and Links

"Cascading Style Sheets separate the presentation from the structural markup of a web site. By applying a CSS style you have the ability to keep the structure of your document lean and fast, while controlling the appearance of the content.

HTML was intended as the structural markup language. This language focuses on the roles that the different elements of a document have to play, not how they have to look. CSS has been invented and developed for the Internet. It is not an adapted tool from print or programming, but a means of enhancing HTML."
  • CSS Creator site is a place for you to learn about and create CSS, Cascading Style Sheets. The CSS Forum is a place where you can discuss CSS page layouts, positioning, bugs and just about anything related to cascading style sheets. The forum is new, free and most of all needs people like you to create a community. Talk about CSS, ask questions, find solutions, and help each other learn at the CSS Forum.

  • The original CSS Creator is a CSS generator, which you can use to create styles and test them on your site. If you are learning CSS have a look and see how changes will affect your site and generate the styles. The CSS Creator has been used tested on 5266 urls.

  • The CSS Layout Generator will generate layouts with a flexible center column and fixed width left and or right column. All columns will be the same length, the layout can be centered on the page or full width and a header and footer can be easily added. 10545 CSS Layouts have been generated.

  • A light weight multi level menu, which uses a very small JavaScript file for browsers with bad CSS support. The markup of the menu is simply unordered lists, it can support multiple levels and will degrade to a simple unordered list if CSS is turned off.

  • A Useful CSS Links page has been added to the site and contains great links to CSS tutorials, tools, tips from all over the web.

Surveys can be used to appraise the sentiments of your audience, or just to gather data.

Here is a tutorial about how to use the Expression Web tools.

"Designing surveys is an art unto itself, requiring careful analysis, skill, and an absolute attention to detail. On the other hand, coding or developing a Web page that contains an electronic form that collects the data from a willing participant is often just as arduous.

Expression Web/FrontPage makes developing and publishing a Web form or survey a breeze. Moreover, it doesn't require that you know any programming or scripting languages that interactively collect and dynamically display results from a database as you will see in this tutorial."

Web Queries

Do You Question the Web?

This feature can make data acquisition a lot easier than Copy-Paste-Reformat-Try again.

"Generally, though, people tend to overlook the option of using the Web as a data source for Excel, be that source the Internet, an intranet, an extranet, or a Web Service. But they shouldn't. Web queries are an easy, yet remarkably flexible and predictable way of bringing data into Microsoft Excel from anywhere on the Web. You can point a Web query at any HTML document that resides on any Web server - or even on a file server, for that matter - and pull part or all of the contents back into your spreadsheet...When you start using Excel's Web queries, you will realize they are almost as limitless as the Web is.

Well Kept Secret

On the menu bar, go to Data>Import External Data. (In 2007-10, Data>Get Extrnal Data>From Web). Then, select Import Data to use an existing Web query or select New Web Query to build a new one.

Hot Spot in Your Pocket

Or at least nearby

It'll cost about $1,000, but think about the bragging rights!

"I love the fact that more and more devices are sporting built-in Wi-Fi. The lone hitch: Wi-Fi is useless without a hotspot.

What if you could marry the short-range power of Wi-Fi with the huge coverage areas of high-speed cellular services such as EV-DO to create a portable hotspot?
Since EV-DO works at freeway speeds, you could even give Internet access to an entire road-trip caravan.

Now I can surf for as long as three hours without being tethered to anything but a cell signal. The project isn't cheap, but prices for the components and service are sure to come down in the next year or so. In the meantime, you can find me in the hills around Southern California. I'll be the one surrounded by PSP-packing hikers."

Form Design

Fancy functionals

Here is a discussion about how to design a form for use on the web.

"Computers are supposed to make our lives easier, not more difficult. As usability-conscious designers, we can make our users' lives easier by thinking about the way people interact with our websites, providing clear direction, and then putting the burden of sorting out the details in the hands of the computers—not the users.

It's that last part that we're going to focus on here. We've all heard and read about big usability mistakes time and time again: "Don't use images or flash for navigation," "Don't use Javascript for links," and I certainly hope we're all applying those lessons in our work. It's often the smallest usability quirks, however, that create the biggest annoyances for users, especially when it comes to HTML forms. Follow these guidelines, and you'll be off to a good start."

  • Use the right field for the task
  • Give them room to type
  • Shorten your forms and question "mandatory" fields
  • Mark mandatory fields clearly
  • Provide descriptive labels for all of your fields
  • Let the computer, not the user, handle information formatting
  • Use informative error messages
  • Don't return users to an altered form

RSS with Your Web Site

Roll your own

If you like the idea of building your own RSS feed, read on.

"Learn about RSS and how to programmatically create an RSS file for your FrontPage 2003 Web site. The download that accompanies this article contains a VBA project and an XSLT file that you can use to generate and display RSS feeds.

If you spend any time on the Internet, you have probably heard of RSS, and you may decide that you need an RSS feed for your Web site. An RSS feed is an Extensible Markup Language (XML) file that people can use to keep up to date with the content on a Web site. RSS feeds are frequently associated with weblogs (blogs), but you can use them for any Web site.

If you have a Web site that contains content that you frequently update, such as articles or stories, you may want an RSS feed to help your customers keep up with your updates. This article explains the XML behind RSS and provides a Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003 Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) project that you can use to programmatically generate an RSS feed for your FrontPage Web site. The download for this article includes an Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformation (XSLT) file that you can use to display the RSS XML file in a browser."
